September 1, 2014 in the garden.  It is starting to feel like fall, but doesn’t look like it yet.

All Italian tomatoes: Principle Borghese; San Marzano; San Marzano Redorta; and Costoluto Fiorentino.
Love them all and will plant next year. In the meantime, lots of sauce, even going to try sun drying. VERY HAPPY.

Been raining like March in N. California where I used to live. 80 degrees later this week thank goodness ( or I might consider returning to CA). Canned dill pickles today!

Foraging in Montana: Wild Huckleberries!

Montana is a forager’s paradise! I can’t believe how much I’ve learned about edible wild berries…stuff that I’ve never seen in the East Coast.

Of course, huckleberries were on the menu for us. We hiked through the relentless summer drizzle and finally found a juicy patch. But God damn, these little buggers were so tiny. We had to pluck for 30min just to get half a cup’s worth. We only had to tail it because something growled at us. Didn’t stay to find out what it was.

Can’t say I’m impressed with the taste, but the aroma was amazing. When you walk through the forest, sometimes you can get waifs of that lovely huckleberry scent. We bought some seeds to see we can cultivate it, but it seems like the general attitude on this has been “yeah…good fuckin luck.” Something about huckleberries that just needs the wild!

This is why huckleberries sell for $45 a pound.
